Market Street Semi-Custom Cabinets - Frequently asked questions
Why are some Costco cabinets higher quality than others? Shouldn’t every cabinet Costco sells be “perfect”?
Simply put, different cabinets are built for different price points, and that will always entail different levels of quality. Not every cabinet is made equal, and the right cabinet for you and your family is a personal choice. Also, keep in mind cabinets are first and foremost a construction material. They are built to be installed on a job-site. Sometimes, cabinets will be built with rough edges and unfinished components that will be covered up by walls, counter tops, backsplash tile, and other construction materials on-site. The joints that hold the doors together will be visible even when the doors are finished. Cabinet doors are assembled with glue and finishing nails, and the nail holes are visible on the back sides of the doors. Sometimes the wood glue that holds cabinets together will be visible inside of the cabinets. These are not “defects” as long as they aren’t visible from the outside once the cabinets are installed, they are a consequence of cabinets being construction materials and not a mass-produced consumer good. Costco’s design studios have worked tirelessly to curate the cabinet selections found on Costco.com for quality and price point. Dollar for dollar, we are confident that our factories produce the most consistent quality of craftsmanship and finishing available on the market today.
I’m not convinced – no one else talks about the quality of their cabinets like you do – does this mean Costco’s cabinets are bad?
Not at all! In fact, the opposite is true. No one else is talking about their quality like we do – not the big box stores and not your local design shop – because the truth is it’s an inconvenience. Contractors and other tradespeople in the industry know that the quality of a cabinet isn’t determined by whether or not the back side of the cabinet has a few splinters hanging off, but the average American who buys cabinets 1.4 times in their lifetime is mostly unaware of the standards to which cabinets are built. So why are we telling you? Because as Costco members ourselves, we believe it’s best to educate members to the realities of what they’re buying. Even if it’s inconvenient to explain. Anyone who tells you their cabinets will never ship with an exposed staple on the back end, or nail holes in their doors is either uninformed or deliberately misinforming you. With cabinets delivered to over 10,000 member households, we know that our quality of design, service, and products speaks for itself. Our cabinets are built in factories across North America and we’ve been building them right for over 40 years. We truly believe that, no matter what your budget is, we will provide the best quality cabinet you can buy for that money as well as the exceptional design service that you deserve as a Costco member.
What about this exceptional design service? What makes you stand out?
Unlike big box stores and local dealerships, our designers are specialized to the line of cabinetry you’re purchasing. Before you purchase your cabinetry you will have the opportunity to work with an expert in the cabinetry line you choose. They will know the cabinets inside and out, unlike our competitors who don’t receive specialized training. A big box store might carry 10 brands, but their designers only really know one or two well, if any at all. When you choose to work with one of Costco’s cabinetry design studios you are choosing to work with someone who designs those cabinets day in, day out. They will be able to offer you the kind of advice and expertise that comes with the intimate knowledge of working exclusively with a single product. Most people only buy a kitchen once in their lives, and we believe that you deserve an expert who is going to get it right, no matter what your price point.
Is buying cabinets online right for me?
Many people nowadays are choosing to buy their cabinets online due to the convenience of the design process and the savings associated with the elimination of showroom retail space that is charactaristic of other online businesses. Buying cabinets online is right for you if you don’t need to touch and feel every part of the cabinetry in a showroom environment in order to make a decision. Typically, an online cabinetry design studio like the ones featured on Costco.com will offer smaller product samples which can be compared for quality of finish and craftsmanship. If this sounds like it could work for you, you’ll also find that our design studios offer a higher degree of expertise than many of our in-person competitors as well as offering exclusivly curated products not found anywhere else, with a higher quality of finish and craftsmanship than similar cabinets sold at the same price points.
What is Market Street™ Cabinetry?
Market Street™ is our cabinet brand, and Costco.com is the exclusive source for Market Street™ Cabinetry.
How will you design my kitchen or bath entirely online?
“We have a simple, three step design process to help you get the kitchen or bath of your dreams:
Step 1: Fill out the design request, and be sure to attach your initial measurement documents. we will get in touch with you to confirm your details.
Step 2: We design your kitchen, bath, or other space based on this information and send you a FREE 3D design and cabinetry quote. Once you’ve reviewed your quote, please call us to schedule an appointment with a designer.
Step 3: You work one-on-one with the designer, on the phone and by way of virtual meetings, where you will add input to the design, and view the changes in real-time. They will get your measurement confirmation, either by having you double-check your own, or by using our Digital Photogrammetry technology. They will then help you finalize your order and pay through Costco.com.””
Will you come out to my home at any point?`
No, we do not visit your home. Through the power of the internet we have the ability to design, measure and show you the quality of our products through our website, sample program, virtual design and digital photo measuring. We can design and provide cabinetry for kitchens, bathrooms, offices, entertainment centers, mud rooms—you name it.
Are your cabinets on display at Costco or is there a showroom I can visit?
No, our cabinets are not on display at any Costco location, nor do we have public showrooms. Likewise, we don’t have physical brochures or other traditional marketing material. This allows us to deliver our cabinets at a lower price point for the quality offered than our competitors.
Will you install my cabinets?
We do not offer installation, but our cabinetry does come fully assembled, unless specified by your personal designer, and ready to install with a guided floor plan and installation guide. We also have a customer service team that can speak with you or your cabinet installer to answer any and all questions about your cabinetry or design
Should I install cabinets on my own?
In general, we strongly recommend that you hire a professional installer if you have never installed cabinets before. If you have never installed cabinets before we at least recommend seeking the advice of someone who has, especially when it comes to materials like fillers, panels, and moldings which will need to be cut precisely by you on the jobsite.
Do you sell countertops, backsplashes, appliances, etc?
No, we sell cabinetry and cabinetry accessories only.
Will you reface – or replace – my existing cabinetry doors and drawers?
No, we do not offer refacing and have no plans to at this time.
Is there a minimum order?
We have no minimum order requirement. We will do any full remodel job for a Kitchen, Bathroom, Mudroom, Laundry Room or other cabinetry project. We will not attempt to match, contrast, or compliment our cabinetry with your existing cabinetry. We do not design kitchen island-only requests as we will only design kitchen islands as part of a full kitchen remodel.
What does a kitchen designer do?
A kitchen designer is a trade professional who specializes in the specification of kitchen cabinetry and cabinetry accessories. They are trained to understand all aspects of kitchen construction and their expertise is especially invaluable in the specification of appliances. A good kitchen designer will ensure that your appliances and cabinetry work seamlessly together, and that all the appropriate clearances are accounted for when designing your space. Designers are trained to consider every aspect of how you will use your kitchen and make recommendations that will maximize your usage of the space. Whether you’re looking for an aesthetic masterpiece, a functional chef’s nirvana, a warm and inviting gathering space, or a little of everything, our kitchen designers are the experts you can rely on to make your dream a reality.
How long will it take to work with my designer?
You should plan to work with your designer for at least three weeks. This could be longer, or shorter, depending on your choices. However, most members want to revise their design at least once or twice before they’re satisfied that they’ve made the right choice. We have found members make the best choices when they wait about a week between revisions, to allow time to consider the design choices they and their designers have made together and how those choices will impact their usage of the space.
How long are design appointments?
Phone appointments usually take no more than an hour. Virtual design appointments are scheduled for two hours but seldom run that long. Finalizing virtual appointments take between 1-4 hours depending on the intricacies of your design.
How do I schedule a design appointment?
After you’ve received your initial design and quote, all you have to do is call or email us, it’s that easy.
Can I schedule a design appointment without receiving an initial design?
No, our process requires you to have an initial design and quote. Filling out your Design request is easy – just click on the “Request Design” button at the top of this page.
What happens if I need to cancel or change my order once it’s placed?
To avoid any confusion, we recommend being 100% sure at the time of order placement that your design, appliances and style selections are accurate. However, you have three days to cancel or change your order. After those three days, your order will release into the production phase and cannot be changed or canceled for any reason as it is custom built just for you.
What will my delivery process be like?
We ship our cabinets via a nationwide distribution network of kitchen cabinets and other home furnishings. This distribution network contracts with local delivery agents across the country to facilitate the last mile delivery of your cabinetry. You will be contacted to schedule the delivery when your cabinetry arrives at the local delivery agent’s facility. From that point you have up to two weeks to schedule delivery before incurring storage charges. You will have to be home to accept the delivery and sign for it, and you should make notes on the packing slip if any containers are damaged on the outside or if something is missing before contacting us directly to report the issues.
What should I do to prepare for my cabinetry delivery?
You should ensure that you have an area to securely store the cabinetry until you are ready to install. This area should be room temperature and relatively free of moisture. Since your new cabinetry is a fine woodworking product, it is susceptible to changes in temperature and humidity. Three days prior to installing your cabinets, please bring them into the space in which you intend to install them so that they may fully acclimate to the space before you install them.
What is the replacement policy for damaged or missing items?
Damaged, defective or missing pieces will be replaced at no charge within 3 weeks. Just call or email us. Please include a picture, the cabinet nomenclature or location and a brief description of what’s wrong and we’ll begin production of an expedited replacement.
Will you ship to AL and HI?
No. We can only ship cabinets within the contiguous 48 US states, and at this time we cannot ship cabinets to a freight forwarder for transport outsdie of the country or to Alaska or Hawaii.
What is Photogrammetry?
Photogrammetry is a technology used to extrapolate measurements from digital photographs, which is typically used in forensic sciences. We are excited to bring this technology to bear in our cabinetry design, exclusively for Costco members. We guarantee that your cabinetry will fit your space when you measure your kitchen with us.
Why would I use Photogrammetry?
Our services are popular among DIYers, who nonetheless want peace of mind measuring their space or those who may not yet have a contractor. People who have a contractor, or feel confident in measuring their own space, may opt to provide their own measurements. Of course, photogrammetry will not work for you if you are building a new space or changing the architecture of your space.
When should I ask for Photogrammetry?
When you begin working with a designer one-on-one, your designer will ask you how you would like to confirm your measurements and offer you the photogrammetry option at that time.
How long does it take?
Once we have acceptable photographs which will yield good measurements, the photogrammetry process takes one business day. In order to get those photographs, you will have to follow our step-by-step instructions and customized photo measuring plan, which will be sent to you by our photogrammetry techs. This process may involve multiple photography sessions if the photos are blurry or taken from the wrong locations.
Does it cost anything to receive a design?
No, you will never pay a fee for a design. Our design services are complimentary as a courtesy, and we aim to provide the best service and quality design to all Costco Members. To best accommodate every member who wants to use our services, we ask that you limit your revisions to three sessions with your designer. Please be mindful of this when working with your designer.
Do I need to work with a designer?
Yes, you will need to work with a designer before you can purchase cabinetry from Costco. Our designers are the only ones able to give accurate price quotes for the cabinets you choose.
How long will it take to receive my design and quote?
While it depends on the complexity of your design, most members will receive their quote within 5 business days of speaking with their designer.
What do I need to give you to get a design and quote?
We need a floor plan with clear measurements of the walls, windows, doors and any other obstacles in your space such as soffits, beams, posts, etc. We strongly recommend submitting pictures of your space as well to help ensure not only the accuracy of your design, but it will also help your designer work more quickly and effectively when designing your space.
Can I use photogrammetry instead of submitting a floor plan?
Our digital photogrammetry is used for verifying measurements for a final design only, and not for measuring a kitchen to get an initial quote.
What appliance information is required in order to get a quote?
We require at least the width of the appliances you intend to use in your new kitchen to provide an accurate initial quote. During the design process, they can be changed if need be. We also need some idea of where they’ll be placed – it should be apparent on any design or floor plan you submit to us. If it is completely up to us, please indicate this. When we finalize your design, we will need all of the model numbers for your appliances. This is to ensure that the cabinetry you are buying will indeed fit with your exact appliances.
I didn’t receive a floor plan with my initial quote, how come?
Our design process is different from many showrooms or big box stores, where you’ll be handed a plan and tasked with figuring most of it out for yourself. We design with you, virtually. Once you’ve received your initial quote, if you like the price and what you see, you can work with a designer to refine your design. At this point, you’ll be seeing the plan on their computer screens in two and three dimensions. We feel that this is a much more exciting and informative way to visualize all the elements in your design.
Why can’t I receive an itemized pricing list?
Our design software prices cabinets by the order, not by the box or piece of molding. This allows you to receive the best pricing possible for the cabinetry order as a whole.
I have multiple rooms that I need cabinetry for. Do I need to fill out the design request multiple times?
We can provide an initial design for the largest cabinet project, most likely the kitchen, and if you like what you see, your personal designer will provide designs for all other rooms.
How much do cabinets cost?
Cabinet costs vary based on the quality of the cabinetry line, the styles and accessories in the design, as well as the finishes and decorative features. However, the primary contributing factor will always be the size of your space. A Design Concierge Associate or kitchen designer will always be able to estimate your pricing based on the size of your space for any of the cabinetry lines offered by Costco. Our estimates are based on average pricing, however, and will never be exact to your space. For that, you’ll need a design and quote which you can get by requesting a design on our website.
What is payment methods can I use to buy my cabinetry?
At the time this FAQ was written, Costco.com accepted all major credit cards except for American Express. You should visit Costco.com for the most current list of accepted payment methods. You can also pay by debit card, but you will have to check with your financial institution to ensure that you are able to make a large purchase using your debit card online, as many banks will automatically flag online transactions over a certain value as fraud. You’ll want to ensure that you’ve ensured an adequate credit limit / transaction limit with your financial institution well in advance of purchasing your cabinetry, as we cannot begin building your cabinetry without first securing your payment in full via Costco.com, and any delays in the payment process will extend your lead time.
Can I pay for my cabinets using more than one credit card?
Of course! When you’re ready to buy your cabinets you will be directed to the Costco.com checkout page where you will be asked to enter the total for your cabinetry purchase. Instead of entering the full value, simply enter the amount you want to pay on a given card and check out for that amount, returning to the checkout page again to make as many partial payments as you need in order to make up the full amount. A word of advice though, if multiple names appear on the credit cards you are using – for instance if a spouse or family member has a different last name as it appears on their credit card – you should let your designer know what to look for when processing your order.
Will I be charged sales tax?
You will be charged sales tax assessed at the time of checkout on Costco.com based on the address you give when you check out on Costco.com. We do not calculate your sales tax liability; all of our price quotes are pre-tax.
When is my payment due?
You must check out in full at time of order. However, unless you are paying with a Debit Card or Costco Gift Card, your credit card will not be charged until the cabinetry ship. In the meantime, it will show as a pending charge on your credit card statement.
Will you install my cabinets?
We do not offer installation, but our cabinetry does come fully assembled, unless specified by your personal designer, and ready to install with a guided floor plan and installation guide. We also have a customer service team that can speak with you or your cabinet installer to answer any and all questions about your cabinetry or design.
Will my cabinets come with installation screws?
Mounting screws and other installation materials are not included with your purchase and should be provided by your installer. We recommend using 2-1/2″ fine thread cabinetry screws and washers.
Will my cabinets come with knobs/pulls?
No, we do not offer or include knobs or pulls with your cabinetry.
